Modern Foreign Languages

Hullavington CE Primary School believes that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all our pupils. The learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross‐curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.  Every child in KS2 takes part in a weekly MFL lesson.  As a school we have chosen to study French.

Through language learning, we aim for our pupils to:

  • develop a positive attitude towards language learning through a range of learning activities.
  • increase their cultural awareness by learning about different countries and their people
  • use their knowledge with growing confidence and competence to understand what they hear and read
  • become aware that language has a structure, and that this structure differs from one language to another;
  • form a sound basis for further study at key stage 3 and beyond.

Following the national curriculum, by the end of KS2 all pupils will:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity
  • be able to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
